Hi everyone! We just moved to Belton, SC last fall and are starting to plan for some cattle for meat and maybe milk. We bought some land with an old farmhouse & barn and are in the process of fixing it up. Right now we have chickens and a couple American Guinea Hogs. Since anything bigger than a turkey is new to us, we've been leaning towards smaller, easier to handle animals. Dexters seem like they would fit the bill! Looking forward to talking to you all and learning all we can!

Welcome to the forum, I think you will love Dexters. Lesa Reid is the director for you region. I'm sure she can put you in touch with some breeders in your area that you can visit. It will give you a chance to see the breed up close and personal. Keep us posted and above all have fun. Here is a link to the ADCA website, you are in region 8, Lisa's information can be found there.

Welcome! I think you'll love Dexters, too! We're in NW GA in Lesa's region, and she's great! She's traveling out West now, but you can get hold of her through the ADCA Region 8 Facebook page.To tell you the truth, we've had better luck with Dexters than turkeys! Out of our three poults, one developed leg problems and had to be put down; one got killed by a coyote or fox; and the third drowned itself in the water tank trying to get away from a predator. I have no idea why it didn't fly up on top of its chicken tractor instead of the water tank. The predator killed the one shortly before Thanksgiving, and the other one died the night before we were going to proactively butcher it. I think Dexters are much easier! They are bigger, though, so you're very wise to plan ahead. Here's a blog post I did a few years ago, "If Cows Could Talk, Here's What They Would Say" telling prospective owners things they need to think about before getting a cow, as well as all the blessings and benefits that come with owning cattle.
