I am new to Dexters. In fact, new to cattle. We will need to supplement hay until our field improves. I see Jiggs hay advertised on C-list here (central Texas). Is that a good hay for cattle? We have a 8 month old heifer, 4 month bull calf and his cow.
Thanks
Sparky

Welcome to the forum Sparky from another fellow Texan. Jiggs like any other hay (we feed Coastal) depends on the nutrient values in it. I can not stress enough that you buy your hay from a reputable grower who fertilizes their fields after every cutting. Go look at their fields and make sure there are no weeds or sticker burrs in it. Test the hay by sending samples to Texas A&M for the nutrient values to make sure you are getting what you pay for. If you will be buying your hay from a feed store make sure they stand behind what they sell. Nothing worse than buying hay full of trash. I buy the best quality hay I can find from the same grower. I live in the Texas Hill Country my hay comes from south of San Antonio. They haven't started cutting 2017 hay yet. What you will be buying now more than likely is last years hay. If stored properly it should'n be a problem, just buy enough to get you to the new fresh cut hay. Sorry that I went the long way around answering your question, but yes Jiggs would be fine to feed your cattle Barb
