My grandson will be showing a Dexter cross steer this year in the miniature market class at our county fair. We are looking for feeding recommendations such as good rations, what kind of gains to expect, and any other relevant information you all think we should know. Thanks for your help!!

Hi Katjk
You don't say where you are located. Different areas use different feed choices. If the steer takes after the Dexter in size, then I'd say roughly 1/2 of whatever the regular steers (Angus, Hereford, etc.) eat in your neck of the woods to be in equivalent condition. I assume you know you'll start feeding no later than the beginning of the year, slowly building up to the preferred show date, so the steer is in peak condition then. Cheers, c.

Steers should be eating 2% of their body weight to gain weight. When I was in 4H I would generally feed my steers a 12-13% all natural textured feed.
