Hi, I am new to dexters, but experienced in beef cows (Hereford, Simmental etc). I was wondering if anyone had any experience of calving dexter cows to shorthorn bulls? A neighbour of ours did it once years ago and got some beautiful heifers out of them. I was thinking about using the dexters as a base cow for crossbreeding, retain the resultant daughters, and have a heavier bullock calf to sell. any views? Thanks.

We sold our Dexter bull to a friend who has Herefords. They used the bull on heifer Hereford and had great results Not sure I would use a large breed bull on a Dexter cow, you could have calving problems. Holly

I agree with Holly, most of the crosses are with a Dexter bull on a larger framed cow. Maybe some one who has actually done the reverse will chime in. Personally I wouldn't chance it.

Thanks, I just was casting around for ideas. I can sell pure Dexter carcasses here (UK), but I think I will always be a mother cow producer at heart.

A local Dexter owner friend bred her Dexter cows to a shorthorn bull one year. The calves were all quite nice. My Dexter first calf heifer was accidentally bred to a Galloway. I decided to let her carry it. All was fine.
