I would separate as soon as possible. You don’t want her bred before 15-16 months. I have read about heifer calves getting bred at 4 months.

I have only 2 pens for wintering. At about 6 months I put the bull calves (and the bull) with the bred mothers of the heifers and put the heifers with the bred mothers of the bull calves. I haven't seen any try to steal milk yet although I know Dexters are known for being good nurse cows.

I always separate for at least a month that way the cows are pretty much dried up. I would never put it past a calf to be a milk stealer. I have seen them sneak from the back.
