Hello, First off, I'm new to everything! Purchased 5 acres 3 years ago, but just started my homestead 3 months ago. So far I've got 14 chickens, which I purchased before building the coop. They stayed and took over my garage. Happily, the coop is done and they're out. Now, I have a messy garage to clean up.
Last weekend I put a deposit on a red 4 week old Dexter. So now I have time to finish clearing and partition the lot. My plans are to get 2 Heifers and 1 or 2 bulls. All registered, all A2/A2.
Came across this board, while doing my research. Seems to be a wealth of info. I'll be here a lot.
Thank you, Armando

Hello again, just wanted to give an update. Got my first 2 Dexters last week. What a great Christmas gift. A 9month old Heifer and a 6month old steer. Right now I have them enclosed in a small area (100ft x 30ft). I'm trying to get them comfortable with me. They are real skittish with me. I thought I would let them be, for the first week, then try to work with them. The breeder, who dropped them off, left the rope on them and told me, just step on the rope to get to them. But the cows are smarter than they look.... they won't even let me get near the rope, before running off. Someone also told me to put brown sugar in my hand and let them lick it off. But while I'm around all they can concentrate on is staying far away. Next piece of advise was to sit down low to the ground and not look them in the eye. So they don't look at you as a predator. I'll try this today. I should be getting my red 5month old Heifer, next month...

Congratulations on starting your herd!
Our treat of choice is alphalfa cubes. All mine love them! You can toss them on the ground at first, work them in closer, and then have them eating out of your hands.
