Hi!
I currently have 3 dexters, who have been on Purina Show Chow Fitter's Edge Medicated for the last year. We had previously had two others, who had been on that grain from the time that we got them as babies, to the time that they passed (both at 8 years of age, one year apart). Both of the 8 year olds died of bloat/torsion caused from bloat, and I'm curious if it could be the feed causing issues? This is (as far as I can tell) not a feed that is meant to be fed long term, but I can't find anything online that says specifically one way or the other. The two older cow's hadn't been getting much grain towards the ends of their lives, but were getting quite a bit when they were younger. The three younger ones get from 1qt to 6qts a day depending on individual as well as a mix of grass hay and alfalfa. These cows are at my work, so I'm limited in my capacity to change things, but I will fight to change it if this could be hurting them. We do have vets that we work with, but they don't specialize in cows so I feel like they're pretty hands off when it comes to their nutrition. Thank you in advance for any help!

I think you'll find many dexter breeders do not feed any grain at all. I feed good quality (green) hay in the winter and grass in the summer. I leave out some mineral salt and breeder or pasture mineral mix to round it out. Never grain or other processed feed. My oldest cow is 13. Never had a loss in our 6 years of dexters. Herd is 15 head including calves.
