I am looking at 2 heifers. 1 is 3 years old the people bought her bred at 18 months and she lost the calf at 6 months along. She has not been re-bred. The other is 2 and has never been bred or been around a bull. She has been with the current owner since she was 3 months old. They are asking $850 each or $1500 for the pair. What do I need to look for and ask? Should I be concerned that the one miscarried? The 3 yo is long legged and the 2yo is short legged.
Any advice would be helpful.

Here are a few question that you should ask yourself before taking on a cow that lost a calf and has not re bred.
1. Who is going to pay to have her vetted to find out why she is not taking. 2. Do you have a bull to keep with her until she takes? 3. Are you willing to pay that price for a cow that you may end up feeding extra long to get in calf, and end up butchering?
Here at my farm I am kinda a hard a$$ when it comes to my cows, they have to produce me a calf or they are gone, some exceptions apply but not many. I would cut that cow some slack the first time she lost her calf but not breeding back in a timely manor would result in her being butchered. The reasoning I have for that is because fertility is hereditary and I have to ask my self if I would want to keep a bull calf or a heifer from a hard breeder. If I would not want it in my herd why should I expect anyone else to want it?

and I would prefer to buy from someone like rdoubled, my first dexter(and only) was a cull. never did take, learned to be a hard culler also. have shocked my family culling a 'pet' that would not settle. thinking about getting a Dexter again, maybe.
