Hi All,
S.A. at Gladhour Farm asked me to forward this out to everyone and promote the farm show she is having on Dexters in Missouri. If you purchase a bull, make sure to ask her for ADCA registration Papers!
Thanks
Dan

Hi, you all. I just want to be sure to invite you to an event up here on Oct 9, a Tuesday. The idea of aAa system is to match bull and cow to have a better-balanced offspring than either parent. Classification is designed to give us as breeders an idea of our cow's/bull's correctness of conformation according to the system set up by our classification committee (who worked hard to try to get the Dexter specifics down in a workable scale so that the system would be especially designed to do right by our Dexters). The aAa system, billed as "complementary" to classification, should be able to help any of us start where we ARE with our present animals and do them justice (or better) in their matings. It is independent of classification. I hope that having 2-4 analysts who do this for a living and can bat back and forth with each other WHY they make a certain judgment, will help all of us to look at the structure of an individual animal more carefully and knowledgeably. The object is so that we can avoid breeding an animal to another Dexter who will double up on the faults, but rather to breed it to another Dexter who can introduce genes to correct faults and inadequacies to get "better" calves--those that will move well, have good capacity (efficient eating), have/pass on adequate udder and udder suspension, will live long and prosper! The "better" the breeding animal is to start with (classification may help us with this part), the shorter the road to well-balanced calves, but all of us are at our present point and can help the breed overall be as balanced in dual-purpose as our own animals allow by learning all we can about bovine structure.
If you decide to come to this event, I hope you will be satisfied that it is worthwhile and educational. I feel sure that you will like the IDEA of aAa, and you can judge for yourself its merit for further use in your corner of the world. It has been most commonly used in dairies (U.S. and Europe) where AI is so commonly used and semen for these "corrections" easily available. But as Dexters are dual-purpose, I have thought that it would be especially worthwhile to have the aAa trained eye look over Dexter herds to give some ideas of what they see. Dexters are AHEAD of many breeds in some ways. But we also know that many have certain common problems. The analysts will just be coming from the World Dairy Expo in WI. Since their eye will be so accustomed to dairy cattle, I plan to take them to see my beef herd (considered locally to be a good herd in type), as well as to look at Dexters, and have Dexter bulls analyzed. Because these guys are coming from a long way and devoting several hours, I really hope that many of you can come and make it feel to them like their time has been worth it. They seem to have a desire to help and to educate, and since many Dexter breeders start out without much of a cattle background, it might be especially helpful to those folks. On the other hand, I often find that those who know the most are the ones who are most interested to learn more. So please feel most welcome and invited!
In the morning, I will be doing a walk-through of my bulls and allowing people to bid on the sale bulls (sort of eBay style). By lunchtime, successful bidders will know they have won their bull, and can then in the afternoon have the aAa analysts analyze their bull they've just bought and be ahead in their breeding program that way. If I sell many of my offered bulls, the analysis will be "on me." Load-up later in the afternoon.
For those of you who haven't had Dexter meat, lunch should be a treat as I am donating Dexter burger. I plan to have other concessions available for money-making project of a local youth group, if it works out as I hope. All around, I hope that everyone has a good time and learns a lot--PLEASE COME! (And call me by Oct 2, if possible, to tell me you are coming.)
Although I know that midweek, midday timing means that some of you cannot come, if you'd like to, you can call (2nd number, evening) and I will ask for enough copies of the analyzers' paperwork for you to have a copy. If you come, bring your walking shoes/boots!
