I have semen from a couple of bulls, Lucifer of Knotting and Woodmagic Hedgehog. Yesterday I put in an order to Belle Fourche Dexters for semen from Hillview Morris and Circle H's Fredrick. I know about the talk going around about Lucifer; but I have a calf out of him and she is very gentle. I also talked to Judy Mosely, Lucifer's owner for many years, and she told me he was a gentle bull. Does anyone have calves out of any of the bulls I listed?

The knotting bull was not very nice. I bought a bull which was a grand son of his and befor he was 18 mo old was not a very nice animal. Used him one breeding season the sold him to slaughter and did not keep any of his calves. Two very good bulls in AI now are Shaun Lord's Lockenvar and a Red bull of Jeff Chambers.

Hi Lsg,
My herd bull Hotty, has quite a bit of Lucifer in him and he is extremely gentle as are his calves. We have had a total of 4 herd bulls so far and Hotty is by far the tamest and the only one who has Lucifer in his bloodlines. While there has been alot of giberish about Lucifer out there, the main thing is how yours acts. All Dexters can are known for being mild mannered, but you must cull for temperment whether it is old heritage bloodlines or whether it is lucifer's offspring.
I have no idea who you are or where you live but I am always happy to show the herd off. ;D Anyone who has been to our place can tell you he is a big baby that loves his neck scratched.
Hope this helps! Thanks Dan

Thanks, Dan. We live near St. Joseph, MO. If I ever get up your way, I would love to see your herd. I too have heard a lot of talk about Lucifer; but Judy assured me that he had been a gentle bull before I ever ordered the semen. I am sure there may be some basis for these reports; ; but after all temperament is inherited from both parents. People seem to forget this. If I had a flighty cow; I would breed her to a bull that was known for an especially quiet temperament. I wanted a bull to improve udder attachment and dairy quality. Lucifer seemed the best bull for the job. I am very pleased with the heifer out of him. We have three Dexter cows and the heifer. I love our Dexters and plan on building up a small herd for myself.

Hi lsg,
While I do think Temperment is partially genetic, but I think a HUGE part of it is learned as well. When you have a cow that is raised out in the middle of a field, and never sees people other than twice a year, it will begin to be flighty. When you have a flighty cow, when you leave the calf with it awhile, it becomes worse than the mother.
We had a cow that I was going to butcher because when I got her she was in a big field and no one ever worked with her. Someone bought her from me bred. she had two calves for me that I weaned at 2 and 3 months of age. She had one for the new buyer and they took it and bottle fed it. All three calves are so tame. None of them have the idiot streak that the mother had. One (the one weaned at 2 months) was a 4H heifer for a kid about 45 minutes from here. She was so gentle for the girl that the grandpa called back this year and asked for a full sibling, but I had sold her. The cow in question, I owned her mother and she was stupid too. Both had great calves while they were here and all were calm. The mother of the said cow above, had a heifer calf I weaned at 3 months and that was one of the animals that had passed away because of the bushes that were fed. That discussion was on the DexterCattleADCA discussion board. So that was a long reply, but I think it is as much learned as genetic.
Hope that helps! Dan

You are so right about learned behavior, Dan. None of the Dexters we bought had been worked with. We got my present milk cow as an in-calf heifer. I had to work with her for quite a while until she trusted me. The other two we bought later from the same source. These cows were sold through the sale barn. They were really flighty. The first thing DH did was to cut off their horns. That gave them a big attitude adjustment. We kept them in close and fed them hay and grain until we could touch them. One of them is still more shy than the other and probably always will be. But the other one comes up for grain and lets us pet her and put a rope halter on her. My little milk cow is one of the gentlest cows that we have ever owned.

I have used Lucifer semen and the calf I did get was fine temperment, not particularly fond of the animal but he had a decent temper. Have had straight old American genetics with mayb 1/16th Lucifer that was nutier than squirrel... well you know.. Most of our animals have some Lucifer in them and it hasn't been a huge problem.
That all being said, there are some stories out there that I think can't be dismissed. While I don't think all of his offspring are going to be nuts it is something you should be aware of... I think a LOT has to do with thedispossition of the mother. If she is a nice calm cow, chances are she will teach her calf that too.
