Quick question. I am sure thiis has been asked before and I did do a search but did not find my answer. I have a Legacy registered bull. I just purchased three ADCA registered cows. Will I be able to register the offspring Legacy, ADCA or both? Or will registration be impossible? Thanks

I guess the answer is, it depends. As far as I know the ADCA do not recognize Legacy as a registry. You will need to have the bull registered in the ADCA to be able to register your calves there also. So that's a place to start, find out if his sire and dam were registered with the ADCA, then you won't have any problems registering him also.

When you had the bull registered with Legacy, you got a genotype from VGL at UC Davis, giving you everything you need to register with ADCA. You need to have the bull's genotype status sent from VGL to the ADCA registrar in the VGL periodic report. It's free. paradisedexters.comDoes this mean that all you need is the animal itself and just do the genotype, and do not need to own sire and dam or do not need to have the breeder of the bull sign the registration application with the parentage details and that s/he was the owner at birth and the transfer to the new owner??

Your bull need to be registered with the American Dexter Cattle Assoc. Legacy is not recognized by them and if you want your calves registered both parents must be ADCA. If he's not reg with the ADCA you need to contact the people who sold him to you and find our if he is eligible to be registered, that has to be done first.

First, your best source for accurate facts would be the ADCA Registrar, who won't be guessing or giving you bad info. Find her at dexterattle.org
Second, 'Legacy' is a private database owned and run by one person, and as such neither the database or the person has any official recognition.
We can only hope that somehow you can collect the lost generations between the last genuine registration and the current animal(s).
Cheers, c.

Carolina Girl,
You can register your Legacy bull with ADCA and you can register your cows with Legacy. Legacy is now an INTERNATIONAL Dexter database/registry of DNA genotyped cattle. The only DNA international registry for Dexter cattle.
In 2004 a genetic preservation effort was began by participants of the Legacy group. There are now preservation breeders in Oregon, Iowa, Missouri, Texas, Ohio, WVa, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Mexico and I am sure I missed some.
In 2004, Legacy established the first Dexter cattle DNA database at the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory ( overseen by the regents of UC-Davis) at the University of California and suggested to other Dexter groups they join the effort. ADCA chose to set up their own private laboratory on the campus of Texas A&M. Eventually many of the larger breeders of Dexter cattle saw the early wisdom of Legacy and have moved to UC-Davis. ALL Dexter cattle that are registered in Legacy are DNA genotyped. Legacy is the ONLY DNA genotype registry in the western hemisphere. Since most animals have multiple generations parentage confirmed the Legacy registry enjoys rare legitimacy and integrity in the world of Dexters. Any registry should be pleased and grateful for the Legacy efforts on behalf of the Dexter breed and it would speak poorly for any registry who did not recognize the stellar accomplishments of Legacy, for that lack of recognition could not be based on wisdom or professionalism or any abiding concern for the Dexter breed! !
Legacy negotiated with the A2 Corporation to bring A2 testing to America for the individual cow owner where previously only commercial dairies had been granted permission. That license was granted to UC-Davis.
Legacy negotiated with Dr. Jon Beever to bring PHA testing to the educational laboratories versus the commercial labs, and that license was first granted to UC-Davis.
When Dexter owners wanted a polled test. . . . . yep. . . you guessed it. . . Legacy and UC Davis were the first to offer that test to owners.
Through the efforts of Legacy Dexter cattle owners were able to order all available Dexter tests at one laboratory for prices NEVER available before in the breed. Prices that were LESS THAN HALF what Dexter owners were paying elsewhere. Due to the Legacy efforts. . . . other laboratories were forced to cut their prices ! !
The Legacy online pedigree database has the most comprehensive ancestral records available anywhere, including early English foundation and Irish foundation animals. The database is now beginning to grow with international animals.
The success of Legacy is non-debatable. That there are those who would like to attribute that success to one person - - - well, that must be one remarkable person. Everyone involved with the success of Legacy is remarkable.
Legacy invites owners to add your DNA tested cattle to the INTERNATIONAL Dexter registry/database. There is now a small fee to do so. . . . . . and Legacy will extend pedigrees for new participants as time and labor permits. Some bloodlines will currently be able to trace to Irish foundation animals! !
Legacy has ALWAYS been working for YOU! !

While Legacy may well be an excellent database it is not the official database of ADCA so is not recognised internationally. In Australia imported US Dexter semen from a bull which is registered with Legacy but not registered with ADCA would not qualify to be registered with the Australian association, DCAI. Therefore calves from that semen would not be eligible for registration in Australia. Margaret

You'll find posts under a number of handles: legacy, sharethelegacy, judy, judy sponaugle, etc., but they all come down to the same thing:
'Legacy' is a private database owned and run by one person, and as such neither the database nor the person has any official standing. There are a few DNA results in this private database from animals in other countries, but the database is NOT recognized as a registry by any of the regular national Dexter associations anywhere in the world.
Beware of verbal tai chi. Carol D.

I see that 'Legacy' is listed as a breed association on a link on the Swiss Village Foundation site. Surely 'Legacy' should be contacting SVF to correct this misleading information. svffoundation.org/animals/dexter-cattle.html

well I have always respected (with a bit of humor to tri to keep the dust from turn n into mud) Carol and Judy's strong stance in what they belive, ikan respect anyone will n 2 dy fight n for their beliefs and I kan see this stand off is not go n 2 end with a white flag b n waved , more like the sound of tapps from a horn. Fer me its hard to find any thing on this earth that I have been so blessed to get to visit for what is called a life time to take soo serious,,,, and in the end I guess we all we be just a "Legacee" in a way??? But I ant tri n 2 disrupt the ongo n saga ,,, it seems to b able 2 fuel its self. SCARRIE things that keep me up at night I see Carol as this BIG (Outlaw colored) RED, Polled, BRITISH dragon with the firee flames, and Judy as a Irish axcented, "pureblooded" (no artifishal additives) Dexter cow with a cork screw tail, pitch forks fer horns, well that is if pitchfork horns are allowed on Legacee cows??? got 2 go now, time fer my meds, I hear the orderlee coming again,,,,,,Bill

eek. looks like I opened a big 'ol can of worms. sorry....that was not my intent. I have tried to contact the breeder of my bull via Email a few times in the last couple of months and have not heard back from her. So I am going to have to try to go this alone, even if it means getting another sample of DNA done. Whatever is required to register him, since I know it's important. if it helps, this is a link to his pedigree on Legacy. www.legacydextercattleregistry.com/a_info.php?sec=1&aid=947

Carolinagirl, using your online pedigree I searched for your bull on both ADCA and PDCA online registries. He is not listed. Neither are his sire or dam. Next I searched for the breeder, Stephanie Parrish. She does not have any animals registered with ADCA that I could find. She has one registered with PDCA, Parrish's Kiara. That animal's dam is Keely of Dog Run, who is back several generations in your bull's pedigree. To be exact, she is the grand-dam of your bull's dam on his sire's line. (I hope I got that right--I don't have a Family Tree Maker program for cattle!) I would be inclined to say you won't be able to register your bull's offspring with either ADCA or PDCA at this point. Your bull's grand-sire Egan of Dog Run is registered with the PDCA. He is your bull's grand-sire both top and bottom, in other words, both sire and dam's lines. Egan is listed as owned by the same person who bred your bull and who apparently still owns his sire. Your best chance would be if she would register Aeden (and possibly Carina) with the PDCA, perhaps if you would pay the cost. I don't know if the PDCA will register an animal if only one parent is registered. If not, you could have a problem because your bull's grand-dam is not registered with either registry, that I could find. However, if the breeder isn't answering your emails, I'm not sure where you could go from here. Maybe someone else with more expertise in the registry process will chime in. The only suggestion I have is to contact the PDCA registrar to see if they have any advice for you. I have found the ADCA registrar, Jill Delaney, to be extremely helpful and quick to respond to questions by email or phone. Hopefully, the PDCA registrar will be able to help you, too.
