Our little red cow, River, is up for sale. She was milked earlier in the year and I try to regularly bring her up in the stanchion and make sure she allows me to milk her a bit and groom her. Today, when I brought her up in the stanchion I noticed what I thought was debris on her neck. I spayed her with some cedar oil to run the flies off and proceeded to brush her. When I got to her neck she pulled away, like she was in discomfort. When I looked closer I found that it wasn't dirt but her skin peeling. The worst of it is on her neck, but it looks to be spreading. There is no blood, redness, or swelling. It is just her skin drying and peeling away. I would think it was only dry skin, but she doesn't want me to scratch her like usual, which tells me it may hurt. I don't want to sell her until I know what it is. Anyone else have any similar skin issues with the cows? I think I may need to call the vet. I'm not certain. Thanks for any advise. -Dani

This could be a case of lice or perhaps irritation from biting flies. It does not sound like ringworm given the description. Not sure where you are located, but this wet cool weather has really brought the lice out this year. I use a good fly spray that also kills lice. Let us know if you call the vet out what his/her diagnosis was!

Thanks. I did look up lice and mange, but still doesn't seem to fit. No others cows have it. Guess, I am going to have to get the vet out. She didn't have anything a week ago, when we sprayed our cattle with Cedar Oil(mixed with water). I am wondering if she is having a reaction to the oil? I am not sure if it's possible. I worry about them just like I do my kids, I tell you.

Have you been having a lot of moist weather? Cows can get rain rot like horses do....

Hello Danijoe Skin reactions to cedar are few and far between but do happen. Dust and moisture can make the irritation worse and will have a severe drying effect of the skin. Reactions vary to it depending on sensitivity. The dry areas will be sore to the touch and itchy, making it a double-edged sword effect. If you can get hold of some cream or spray that is free of additives such as perfumes etc and gently place it on the skin, this does help alot as it stops the itching feeling for a while. But only time will let it heal.

As others have said could be lice, though that is more often on shoulders, and with the wet weather and then temps rising more possible rain rot. May need to wash her in a medicated shampoo to treat the infection, may even need some antibiotics. Just another thought, have you used pouron on her recently? May be a reaction. Have to watch natural remedies as they can cause some real bad reactions, tea-tree oil is really bad, can burn the skin, damages healthy tissue. Shouldn't be used on cows.

I haven't heard of rain rot before. I'm not familiar with it. I'll need to look that up. We have been getting lots of rain and the ground has been staying wet. The Vet won't be able to come out until Monday. I will get pictures up as soon as I can. Thank you all for your help. -Dani

No, so far, we haven't use any chemicals. Only the cedar oil. And if it's causing a reaction, River is the only one. -Dani

How is she going?
Does it look like she is recovering from what ever caused it?

She does not appear to be in any real discomfort. The vet will be out Monday to do pregnancy checks and she is going to have a look at River's skin. I am hoping it will be easy to treat. -Dani

That doesn't look like rain rot. From our experience it usually occurs along the topline. I've never seen anything that resembles that other than bots on a horse, or at least the residual effect from the bots.

That is an interesting looking rash...... It looks to me to be some sort of dermatitus.....maybe she got into some poison oak or ivy or something like that....JMO
