When feeding hay tonight Justus discovered a little calf by Polly's (aka Ding-A-Ling) side. Little black ball of fur. She was all spit and vinegar, so perhaps the birthday was yesterday? At one point the calf was kicking and jumping, she launched herself high into the air and attempted a sharp turn at the same time, resulting in a less than graceful wipe-out. At which point Polly left the hay bale and ran to the baby making those deep and low growling noises that worried mama cows make. Justus said it was a hoot to witness it! Pictures tomorrow.

Congratulations! A replay of the wipeout on video would be in order . . .

For reference, Malcolm is 5'4". We caught the calf to weigh her - 39 lbs! She may be as old as 4 days, so her birth weight must've been considerably smaller. Nice little udder. It's definitely a girl!

She's quite a chunky, solid little girl! And that is a nice udder Polly has.

P.J., did you know her daddy is New Day Little John? Sam in Oark let me bring Polly over to his farm - he has Little John, PHA-. This little girl's future will be determined, in part, by her test results. I will keep you informed.

Going to name her Semmerling after one of the smallest Derringers. She's got such a short little face! And in this pic you can see how thick and shiny her coat is, like sable fur!

that's just the cutest little thing I've seen. That makes her Lelia's grand-daughter, how cool.

Remind me what "Semmerling" means? "Fur ball," right?
